Platform Shoes – Journey from Ancient Greece to Present
Platform shoes have seen countless innovations and design adaptations throughout the years. The trend began in ancient Greece to make the most important actors in a show stand tallest, and therefore easiest to see. Fast forward to the middle ages, and you would see EVERYONE wearing wooden “pattens” to elevate them above the waste in the streets. (See, platform shoes can be made fashionable AND functional!) The platform continued to evolve throughout the Medici era of Italian history. Italian nobility wore platforms to give short statures an extra boost! Salvatore Ferragamo made the platform shoe current when he created the rainbow platform made of colorful cork in the late 1930s. It’s true that fashion trends are recycled with each new generation – that which was once old becomes new again!
